You CAN do something to protect your home.
90% of all home losses in wildfires are caused by embers, carried in the high winds of wildfire, that travel ahead of the main fire and ignite fuels on or near the home.
Wildfire-ready homeowners know: EMBERS ARE THE #1 THREAT TO HOMES
By applying the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) framework and addressing threats in each zone—starting closest to your home—you can significantly reduce your property’s vulnerability to wildfire.
The links below include best practices for helping your home withstand a blaze.
Selecting fire-resilient plants and placing them thoughtfully around your home can help reduce the ignitability of your property.
Prune overhanging branches, at least 10' away from chimney.
Remove ladder fuels—shrubs, small trees, and lower limbs—to create vertical separation.
Mow grass to 4" or less within 30' of your home.
Do not store flammable materials under your deck or porch.
Store firewood at least 30' away, preferably uphill.
Remove flammable material from within
6" of siding.
